The Keeper Flounder Have Left The Building, NOT !

It's the middle of August, all the Keeper Flounder have left the Biilding?  True or False.  I know that this forum is not live yet, but I had a good day yesterday and I figured that I would share the Report for future referance.  Besides I want to get some practice here at the "Showell Report".
Yesterday I had regular customer, Len Ariff on board with a new partner.  He brought his eight year old Grand daughter, Noa Zaken for her first Saltwater Excursion.  We made a couple early drifts near the inlet just hoping that a Striper might be inclined to eat a SPOT.  No such luck and the wind and the tide were enouch to make for some difficult fishing for an eight year old.  Even the back channels real close to the inlet refused to give up a flounder and Baby Black Seabass destroyed GULP, minnows and even peanut bunker as soon as they hit the bottom.  So to find the fish we headed WEST.  Not extremely far but into the narrow channels I usually fish.

Grandpop had left his rod with a spot in the competant hands of Rodney, the Rod Holder while he assisted Noa with her tackle.  It didn't take long until the rod bent over and Len took the rod from Rodney and handed the it to his Granddaughter.  She had a tough fight, but she landed her first flounder ever, an Eighteen Inch keeper!  That got her started and she couldn't be stopped.  She ended up with three shorts and three keepers including a twenty incher that took the rod when she had it in her hands.

This was to be a short trip, but as we got closer to high tide the bite continued in each little pocket we fished.  I'm sure we could have found more in the next hour or two before the tide got into a race heading back to the ocean.

Just a couple points about the August fluke Fishing as I see it:

1, Fish off the beaten path and definately don't overlook narrow thorofares. Yesterday we had only three shorts for three keepers.  The keepers had staked a claim to a good home and were eating good. They probably chase the smaller fish out of the Honey Holes.

2. Fish the Tide (High tide is usually best.) and the Currents and how they relate to structure.

3. Take plenty of bait.  The structure that holds Flounder also holds a huge population of micro seabass that want to eat aything they can get into their mouths so they can grow bigger fast.  Bigger Baits also will help keep them at bay.  Minnows work great, but other baits such as SPOT, Peanut Bunker and Mullet are preferred by flounders and most other predators.  Right now there is so much selection that that doormat can afford to be picky as to what she eats.

4.  If you have a Trolling Motor, remember the key word "Trolling" so many anglers are putting an expensive anchor on their boats and only use it to sit on a spot and drop lines down to a
Tog.  Any time you are moving with lines in the water you are literally trolling.  Drifting is un controlled trolling.  When you use the Trolling Motor you can control the direction and the speed of the drift and keep in the strike zone.  Add some good electronics and if you pay attention, you can really up your score.

That should do it for now.  We still have over a week of August so get out and take advantage.  Then comes Sept

ember which is even better.
